“Letters From the Earth” is a title purloined from the literary work of the famous American author Mark Twain. The central portion of Twain’s book is a collection of letters which the character Satan addresses to two of his archangel friends, postdated from the Earth where he has come on a visit. Written in a very sarcastic tone, the letters reveal a strong sense of disillusionment on the part of the author with regard to the cruelty and hypocrisy of the human race and its supposed Creator.

In this series of artwork, I have altered old tools, flattened pots, and other remnants of the human race’s presence on Earth, and they serve as witnesses to the fact that we have been very busy here doing a bunch of work. But all at what price, and to what end? It has been predicted that the weight of the plastic garbage in our planet’s oceans will supercede the weight of the fish by the year 2050. We are confronting climate change created by our activities that threatens to provoke a mass extinction event, during which the majority of living species here will likely disappear. Is there any way to avoid this? Or perhaps the human will has nothing to do with it, and we are just a tiny part of a biosphere that has spent milenia in cycles of life and death, developing lines of evolution which eventually return to primary matter without leaving hardly a trace…But in this precise moment, an immense amount of diverse species and a massive quantity of garbage coexist…a circumstance worthy of urgent letters addressed to whomever might be capable of reading and understanding them…
